The time was 1873 and the setting a buffalo hunter's camp in the Northern Panhandle. The Texas herd was nearing extinction. The Comanches had fought bitterly for their land and their buffalo but it was a losing game. Occasionally they would come into camp under truce ostensibly for trade but mostly for a handout of coffee with lots of sugar.
The giving was reluctant but it was better than fighting. A cold wind fans the fire and foretells the end of the Texas buffalo.
