Bev Doolittle was born and raised in California. In
1968, she graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles.
She met her husband, Jay, at school and they started married life with
a painting trip to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parksa portent
of things to come. For the next five years, however, the Doolittles
were art directors in an ad agency in Los Angeles.
It paid well, Bev explains, but we
didnt like living in the city. We wanted to be close to nature,
to paint outdoors and we wanted to travel. They have now accomplished
both. Their frequent travels and backpacking trips have covered the
western United States, Canada, Baja California and East Africa. They
now live close to nature in the high desert of California.
Bev Doolittles subject matter is provided by the
out-of-doors. I love nature, she says. I try to look
beyond the obvious and create unique, meaningful paintings depicting
our Western wilderness and its inhabitants. I start with a concept and
attempt to convey it through strong design coupled with detailed realism.
I want people to think when they look at my paintings.

It’s hard work being a foal. First off, after you are born, you don’t even get a meal until you stand. Those legs you have to stand on can be nearly 90% the size of those on a full grown horse. You need those big legs because every day they have to support the additional two to three pounds you’ve grown everyday. Then, of course, one has play. It’s a big beautiful world you’ve been born into and, heck, they don’t call it “horsin’ around” for nothing. Spring is in the air. There are the other colts and fillies to impress, food to eat, mares to trot beside, more food, dirt to roll in, maybe a snack, bugs everywhere, more food and so on. Every now and then it does one good to drop down into the closest patch of green grass and spring blossoms and grab a little siesta. After all, it’s hard work being a foal.
